WBHS Blue & Gold Freshmen Orchestras

The Western Branch High School Blue & Gold String Orchestra is an ensemble made up of all 9th grade students. The purpose of the Blue & Gold 9th grade preparatory level string orchestra class is to introduce students to high school level-performance based instruction. All WBHS Freshmen orchestra students are auditioned in 8th grade by their director and must enroll in either the Blue (‘A’ day) or Gold (‘B’ day) orchestra classes. These classes can perform independently or combined on orchestra concert. The curriculum is designed around four major public performances with additional instruction on music composition and theory. The central objective of the Blue & Gold orchestra class is to strengthen student’s individual instrument technique while also developing advanced ensemble skills. The WBHS Blue & Gold Orchestra has consistently earned Superior ratings in District Assessment. They have also received honors in the past including many “Gold” ratings and Overall  Instrumental “Champion” awards in national competitions.

WBHS Concert Orchestras

The Western Branch High School Concert Orchestra is an ensemble made up of mostly 10th grade students with some 11th and 12th graders.  The purpose of the Concert Orchestra Intermediate level string orchestra class is to have students continue working towards a high level performance based achievement. The concert orchestra consists of two different orchestra classes that meet on ‘A’ and ‘B’ days. The curriculum is designed around four major public performances with additional instruction in music theory, listening, composition, and improvisation. The central objective of the Concert orchestra class is to continue to strengthen individual instrument techniques while continuing to develop professional style ensemble skills. The Concert orchestra is a newer ensemble who has set a high standard in public performances. Many concert orchestra members perform with the Bruin Sinfonia orchestra in national competitions.

WBHS Bruin Sinfonia Orchestra

The Western Branch High School Bruin Sinfonia String Orchestra is an ensemble made up of 11th and 12th grade students. The purpose of the Bruin Sinfonia string orchestra class is to have students work at an advanced level in a performance-based class. The Bruin Sinfonia meets at 7:30am before school in a Zero Bell Mondays thru Thursdays. The curriculum is performance based with at least eight performances per school year. This ensemble performs the highest level literature in a professional setting. The WBHS Bruin Sinfonia has performed all over the East Coast including Chicago, New York City, Atlanta, Washington DC, Annapolis, Myrtle Beach, Philadelphia, and the Bahamas. They have been onstage at the Kennedy Center and Carnegie Hall.

Cammerata Orchestra

The Western Branch High School Cammerata Chamber Orchestra is an ensemble made up of 10-12th grade students. This chamber orchestra is WBHS’s newest string orchestra offering. The purpose of the Cammerata Chamber Orchestra class is to prepare students for the vocational side of chamber orchestra at an advanced level. This ensemble meets everyday during the Fall semester as a 1st bell class. Students who perform in the class are also asked to perform as a member of the Bruin Sinfonia (Zero bell) orchestra as well. The curriculum includes numerous performances at unique and more intimate settings including: receptions, weddings, banquets, memorial services, etc. This ensemble performs classical chamber music without a conductor and learns how to set up performance jobs. The Cammerata Chamber Orchestras have performed at nursing homes, elementary schools, daycare facilities, and numerous times for the Chesapeake, City Schools Superintendent and the School Board.
